Hooray for the Fourth of July

Family, Friends, Food, Fireworks! What can be better? Every year across America people are celebrating the birth of our country. It’s a great holiday and enjoyed in all 50 states. I wonder how many people stop to think why we are celebrating or is it just another holiday. The Fourth of July also known as Independence day screams to me history. Don’t get me wrong I love the fun and sun, but I also love the reason we celebrate. My company sends a Fourth of July card as a remembrance. I look forward to this every year.

In 1776 the Continental Congress voted on July 2 to declare their independence from Great Britain. The day we celebrate is July 4 because that is the date on the actual declaration and that is when it is signed. If you read history you will note how powerful these words were in 1776. “When in the course of human events…..” stirred the hearts of men in all walks of life. The founding fathers were a courageous group of men. We remember them often. Perhaps you don’t know that John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were two of three signers to become president. They both died on the 50th anniversary, July 4, 1826.  James Monroe also a founding father, died on July 4, 1831. I wonder about the coincidence of that.

I am inspired this year to reread the Declaration of Independence in honor of these brave men. Then it is time for hot dogs, ice cream and fireworks. Make sure to send out your July 4th cards and have a great holiday!
