Sympathy Card Message Suggestions

Sympathy cards are always an appropriate way to show that your thoughts are with someone who has suffered a loss. They should ideally be sent as soon as possible after you learn of a death. Preferably, there should be a handwritten note in addition to any personalization preprinted on the inside of the card. Try to reread your card from the perspective of the receiver, before it is actually sent. Remember, a sympathy card is likely to be kept, so their comforting effects will be more lasting than spoken or emailed sentiments.

Not everyone can easily find the right words to express their condolences. Perhaps some of these suggested phrases will help you to compose your own personal message of sympathy:

  • I was deeply saddened to learn of your father’s death.
  • Please accept my sincere sympathy on the loss of your sister.
  • Our sincere condolences on the passing of your dear wife.
  • Words feel so inadequate to express my sorrow of Bob’s death.
  • Heartfelt sympathy for the death of your sweet mother.
  • We are all saddened by the death of Mr. Johnson.
  • My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
  • You are in our thoughts.
  • I am thinking of you during this difficult time.
  • He will be missed and I extend my deepest sympathies to you.
  • We send our sincere condolences to you and your entire family for your loss.
  • I hope that you are comforted by happy memories of your time together.
  • You remain in our hearts and thoughts.
  • Remembering your dear one and wishing you comfort and peace.
  • May God’s grace and strength be with you during this time of sorrow.
  • May the good Lord be with you at this time of sorrow and keep you in His prayers.
