The loss of a loved one is a very emotional time for most people.\u00a0 What to say and do can be a very difficult morass to traverse.\u00a0 You never want to offend anyone so here are a few sympathy card do\u2019s and don\u2019ts.<\/p>\n

Do\u2019s<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Send a sympathy card as soon as possible after hearing of a friend or colleague\u2019s loss. Delaying will just make their grievance longer.<\/li>\n
  2. Add a personal note such as \u201cwe are keeping you in our prayers\u201d or \u201cwe are here if you need us\u201d.<\/li>\n
  3. Address the card to the person and their family. You can say John Smith and family or Mary, John, and the Smith family.\u00a0 Remember the whole family will be grieving and they will all appreciate your thoughtfulness.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Don\u2019ts<\/strong><\/p>\n

    1. Don\u2019t write I know how you feel. This can really sound condescending.\u00a0 You don\u2019t know how they feel.\u00a0 Everyone deals with loss differently and you don\u2019t want to convey the impression that their pain is felt the same by everyone, making it insignificant.<\/li>\n
    2. Don\u2019t send a typed note. Sympathy cards should always be personal.\u00a0 Expressing sympathy with a typed note appears cold and unfeeling.<\/li>\n
    3. Remember if you feel uncomfortable writing something, it will come across wrong to the recipient.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
