Why do people make a wish and then blow out the candles on a birthday cake?

Making a wish and blowing out the candles on a birthday cake has its roots in ancient pagan customs. The thinking was that the smoke would carry your wish to heaven (It also makes it easier to eat the cake if you blow out the candles first).
