Sympathy Cards Express Heartfelt Sentiment

We have all experienced the loss of a beloved family member or a cherished friend. Often the sadness felt during these times of bereavement can be overwhelming. Always welcome are visitors who come to share in our sorrow and lend their support. They bring caring embraces, handshakes and words of comfort. Most of them also bring sympathy cards which they have placed neatly on a table near a memoriam of photos celebrating the life of the departed. Without a word being spoken, a sympathy card can convey what we would like to express in an understated way.

A sympathy card can express, in simple fashion, our sincere heartfelt sentiment. The message is usually a short, simple statement. A phrase. A sentence. Perhaps a short Bible verse. Whatever the content of the card it is sure to show the reader you care.

Sometimes when information concerning one’s death reaches us it is too late to show our support in person. Visitation schedules have passed, funeral arrangements have been made, and on occasion, we are too many miles away. Mailing a sympathy card shows that you care enough to share and express your feelings for another during their grieving period. Whether it be a family member or friend, co-worker or client, a neighbor or local shopkeeper, classic sympathy cards can state your feelings without a word having been spoken.

Corporate Greeting Cards with a Treat for your Customers

If you are a small business owner, you may have asked yourself some of these questions about business greeting cards: Why send corporate greeting cards? Is it really worth the effort? What is the return on my investment in business greeting cards? Now we are getting to the bottom line. If you spend money on greeting cards for business, will it generate business? The answer is yes.

In my hometown, there are two bakeries, each in business for more than 20 years. A new bakery opened up last year, but sadly, is now closed. Residents and shoppers knew that a bakery closed, but which one? One of the established bakeries sent customized greeting cards in December to everyone on their mailing list to wish them happy holidays, and offered a free cupcake just for bringing in the card.

For a relatively small investment in business greeting cards and delicious cupcakes, the bakery attracted customers who purchased baked goods, more than paying for the promotional event. And, the bakery had a useful measure of the effectiveness of sending the greeting cards for their business.

When you thank your customers or remember their special occasions with business greeting cards, you are reminding them that you are in business. That can be very important these days when, unfortunately, many small businesses have not survived. Business greeting cards are one of the most cost-effective ways to connect with your customers on a regular basis.

An Insider’s Look at the Judging of our Annual Create-A-Greeting-Card $10,000 Scholarship Contest

Well it didn’t take too long after we announced this year’s winner of our 3rd Annual Create-A-Greeting Card $10,000 Scholarship Contest to start hearing from some folks who found our choice a bit perplexing or found some other little nuance in the design that they took issue with.

That’s ok. We get it. We realized when we pick this year’s winner that there might be a few lifted eye brows given some of the other excellent finalists also in the running. In the infamous words of Ricky Ricardo do we have some “splainin’ to do?”

Well, yes and no. 🙂 You see, ultimately it is up to our judging panel, and believe us, they spend many hours behind closed doors, drinking way too much coffee and Diet Coke trying to whittle down the choices while taking many different things into consideration during the process.

So just what are those factors that lurk in the minds of our astute judges? Well…it turns out there are some obvious things that are considered and perhaps some not so obvious things. So if you are one of the people thinking of entering our next scholarship contest and you are smart enough to be reading this, you just might learn something that will be of value to you.

The Judging Criteria (not limited to the following):

1)  Does the design concept seem to “fit” in our existing line of Christmas, Birthday or other All-Occasion designs?

2)  We look for a spark of creativity, something fresh in the card design.

3)  We don’t judge a greeting card design by its cover. Kind of ironic isn’t it? Meaning, we don’t just look at what was submitted to us “as is”. We look at it to see what a design is capable of becoming once in the hands of our expert team who will apply the techniques and treatments we are renowned for such as embossing, bright colored or refractory foils, and maybe a dash of glitter.

4)  The genre in which design is made whether it be a painting, a hand drawn sketch, a photograph…how ever it was created does not play a big factor in the decision making process as proven by this year’s pick. Yes, a simple yet appealing doodle can actually win because we believe we can turn it into a top selling card.

5)  Now, here is the one thing virtually no one might think of that we absolutely must consider! How will this design look in the media in which we advertise? You see, our cards are not sold in stores, so we must rely on our print catalogs and web pages to illustrate the beauty of our greeting cards designs. Even if we think a design is breathtaking, if we don’t think it will translate well into that media then it is likely ruled out.

6)  Last but not least, and this should come as no surprise folks, the design must be original. Not only must it be original but the winner needs to be able to provide us with the final art. So if we find out that a design was a gift from the clip art fairy or somehow created out of some other less than original means, well please understand we simply cannot use it!

Hopefully this will shed some light on how we go about picking the winner of our Create-A-Greeting Card $10,000 Scholarship Contest. So take out a paintbrush, a pencil, a pen or your favorite digital camera and get busy on your chance to design the next top selling Christmas card or All-Occasion design. Good luck to all and thank you to everyone who put the time and effort into our past contests.

Design #127CX – Season’s Greetings Jewel

I see Season’s Greetings cards, personalized Christmas cards, holiday cards, and all occasion cards every day. No, it’s not because I’m card-obsessed; it’s the job I have. The company I work for produces over 300 card designs in the aforementioned categories. Being objective about these cards when it comes to describing them is a little difficult for me because I think our cards are the best in the world.

As I am writing this, I am looking at design #127CX, Season’s Greetings Jewel Holiday Card. This card design features a deeply embossed tree ornament topped off with a green ribbon that matches the color used on the ornament. Gold foil is used to stamp the designs that appear on the ornament, which is framed in gold foil and has the words “Season’s Greetings” in gold foil stamped in script lettering beneath it. As a personalized Christmas card, it is elegantly designed yet understated at the same time. You really have to see the card to understand how it can be elegant and simple at the same time. It’s a great looking card.

Congratulations to the Winner!

Congratulations to Lauren Ondreko of Friendswood, Texas! She is the winner of our 3rd Annual Create-A-Greeting-Card $10,000 Scholarship Contest! Lauren, a senior at Friendswood High School, created a fun and festive design that we’ll easily be able to convert into a beautiful holiday card. Even though Lauren submitted her work on lined loose-leaf paper, it was done exceptionally well and she submitted a design that is 100% original and unique. Our judges had a tough decision to make as there were so many outstanding entries in the finalist pool. There is a possibility that we may pick one or two additional entries to be converted into greeting cards, and the students who submitted these designs will be compensated for their work.

Here is the design Lauren submitted:

The Finalists have been Chosen

After sorting through the 8,000+ entries received for the 3rd Annual Create-A-Greeting-Card $10,000 Scholarship Contest, our judges picked 143 designs to qualify as finalists. We’ve created a slideshow that displays all of the finalists’ designs, so please be sure to check it out.

If you are a finalist, we encourage you to share the good news with your family and friends. We’ve made each slide an individual link, so you can email the URL to your greatest fans. Link information is located in the white box below each slide. If you or someone you know has a blog or website, we’ve also provided some basic code to make linking to your slide as easy as pie!

After the slideshow was put up, our judges found out that a few of the designs were not original. Please note that those designs were disqualified from the finalist pool and removed from the slideshow. Originality is a key factor for this scholarship contest. Please keep this in mind when you submit your entry for the 4th Annual Create-A-Greeting-Card $10,000 Scholarship Contest.

Business Anniversary Cards Can Make your Employees Feel Special

My company sends out business greeting cards to all its employees for their birthdays and for the anniversaries of their employment. Since I’m usually the one signing the cards and not the recipient I never gave much thought to how I’d feel if I didn’t receive a card for one of my special days. And, on occasion, I have forgotten to send business anniversary cards out, which is not a very good thing for morale as I soon learned.

I was celebrating my 40th year at my company and kind of felt like I was being ignored because I hadn’t received any type of card to acknowledge this day. Each of the Executives stopped by in person and congratulated me but I felt let down because it seemed like any other day to them – not my special day!

Then later that morning I found the nicest business anniversary card on my desk. It was signed by all the Executives with kind words of recognition for all my years of service. I never realized just how good it could feel to be on the receiving end of an anniversary card! Each person made it a point of writing a special remembrance to signify the importance of this special time for me. By giving me this card they made me feel that my anniversary mattered and was special to them.

A Very Special Personalized Greeting Card

My Mother passed away recently so I had a few of her personal things I packed in boxes to go through at a less emotional time. Mom loved sending personalized greeting cards to family and friends. She had a greeting card for every occasion. It was a ritual for her to go to the store to buy cards all the time. She would always say it makes a person feel special to receive a card, and it was uncanny how she could whip out a card if you needed one for any occasion. As I was going through her things I found some greeting cards she had carefully put away. I came across an envelope addressed to her sister. I carefully opened the unsealed envelope and came across a lovely personalized birthday card she had gotten for her sister’s birthday, which was still a month away.

The personalized birthday card expressed how lucky she was to have her as a sister. It was so touching it brought tears to my eyes. I said to myself, wow she took the time to address and sign the card months ahead so it was up to me to deliver it to my aunt. I mailed the birthday card two days before her birthday and it did arrive exactly on that day. My aunt called me that evening to tell me about her special birthday card.

She was feeling down that morning thinking of her sister not being here to share the day with her as they’ve done in past years. She went to get her mail which came earlier than usual, and when she went through the mail and saw the card addressed in her sister’s handwriting she thought, “How could that be?” She opened the card and read the final loving words sent by her sister for her birthday. She told me how wonderful she felt and the birthday card just made her entire day because she did spend her birthday with her sister after all, and she will cherish her last birthday card from my Mom until they see each other again someday. My Mother was so right when she said “a greeting card of any kind will always make a person feel special.”
